THE SEVENTH ISSUE OF KAYISI KENT A4 IS OUT!

The seventh issue by Yasemin Ozcan Kaya titled Leaf, consists of the results of a research process triggered by the artist's curiosity about the history of a particular sculpture that she came across during a visit to Malatya in 2008.

Monuments in Turkey have been subject to censure interventions from time to time, however such interventions have resulted from "public reaction” and disapproval. For instance the Atatürk and Youth Monument in Malatya, built by sculptors Nijad Sirel and Hakkı Atamulu in 1947, has generated public reaction because the male figure bearing the flag is nude, yet there has not been a direct response from officials. The sexual organ of the figure in the statue has been demolished by certain individuals, and later, during Minister Nihat Erim’s visit to the monument, a previously readied leaf motif has been affixed to the figure’s private parts right there.
